"MasterMario - Keeper of the V8s" (mastermario)

We had T he Santa Clause movie on while putting up decorations the other night and the cop cars made me stop in my tracks.
Me: Why are the cop cars from the 80s? Isn’t this movie only like 10 or 15 years old?
*looks up movie release date*
Me: 1994?!?!?
I now have an odd desire for an 80s Caprice for some reason as well.

Old movies where the protagonists avoid detection by turning off their headlights was kind of a trope at one point.
Now with LED DRLs, there would be no way to do this. Sad.

That might be a Canadian thing (I think DRLs are required there?). Here it’s perfectly normal to see silver cars with no running lights driving in poor visibility conditions. I’m pretty sure many of them have just turned them off, but it’s also perfectly legal to sell cars without them in the states.

True, DRL’s are a Canadian thing. But, I think that lots of vehicles, especially higher end ones in the US come with them now.

I rewatched Stargate some time ago, and was struck by all the government cars being so boxy. Even for a movie I know to be firmly in the ‘90s I was expecting ‘90s cars (even though it’s entirely reasonable that the Air Force or whatever wouldn’t instant ly update their entire fleet).

How about when you watch old X-Files and they’re bombing around in a Taurus SHO... I AM OLD.

I recently reached The Siege, and was surprised to see all the 3rd gen Panther Crown Victorias in it, then remembered the movie is 21 years old. Then, I realized the local police still have several.

Yep, in Murka, land of the free, the semi-sentient fleshbag behind the wheel can switch off DRLs and auto lights both, I see it all the time on late model cars, especially Toyolex products and upmarket CUVs.

Younger coworker mentioned that she only recently learned which movie the quote “keep the change, ya filthy animal” came from.

Just to bring the conversation full circle, Tim Allen’s character in The Santa Clause drives a 94' Taurus SHO.

Yep, that’s what it feels like.
Try teaching middle school. I am intimately familiar with how old I am.

Or the one where the villain steps out into the road in front of the car, and the protagonist runs them straight over. Not possible with auto braking.
And don't get me started on RWD cars fish tailing with every slight adjustment to the wheel, like traction control isn't a thing.

The bubble Caprice came out for the ’91 model year. Plenty of box Caprices were still in service as cop cars in ’94. In more recent history, Ford stopped making the Crown Vic Police Interceptor after the 2011 model year, and think about how long those stayed in circulation.
Movies & TV also tend to use older cop cars, especially if they’re going to be destroyed.
